Every product in our roundups is judged on how it holds up at a real table, using published specifications, long-run owner reports, and the consensus of play groups who have lived with it. We weigh durability, readability, and reported feel in the hand over unboxing aesthetics.
Who writes these picks
RollHoard is written and maintained by its editorial team. We publish under the RollHoard name rather than a personal byline, because our rankings come from documented research rather than one person's hands-on experience. Where a specification, measurement, or figure appears in a guide, it comes from the manufacturer or a cited source, not from our own bench.
What we score on
Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.
Table durability
Does it survive weekly sessions, spilled drinks, and a bag toss? We read the stated materials, coatings, and hinge construction against what owners report after months of use.
Readability
Dice need legible numbers under dim table lighting. Trays need contrast. DM screens need font sizes that work when stress is high. We judge inking, contrast, and type size from maker specs and close product photography.
System compatibility
We flag which products work for 5e-compatible play, Pathfinder 2e, Call of Cthulhu, and system-agnostic tables so you buy once.
Value for collectors
Dice-goblin math: cost per set, bag capacity, number of slots on condition rings. We run the numbers from the published specs.
DM vs player fit
Every roundup calls out whether a pick optimizes for the game master or the player. Different roles, different needs.
How our picks work
Each category roundup is ranked by our editorial score. The highest-scored option carries the Top Pick badge. Separately, the option that delivers the most for the money carries the Best Value badge. They are often different products on purpose: the best-scored is not always the smartest buy for most people, and we tell you which is which.
What we never do
- We take no payment, free product, or sponsorship in exchange for coverage or a ranking. There are no paid placements.
- We do not claim to have tested a product we have not tested, and we do not publish reviews under the name of a person who does not exist.
- We say what is wrong with a product, not just what is right. Every pick lists real tradeoffs.
- We match recommendations to your situation (fitment, skill level, budget, and use case) instead of pushing one product on everyone.
